The Gate of Dreams, a hardcover keepsake book, is reminiscent of classic fairy tale editions. Combining the talents of writer as well as artist, Lillian Somersaulter Moats, has created a little masterpiece. Her characters – often humble craftsmen, innocent children, or simple villagers – along with the rural settings of her stories, bring to the reader that sense of delight, recognition, suspense and wonder found in the works of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen.

“Since I believe fairy stories are meant to enliven a child’s own imagination, I like to intrude as little as possible upon this wondrous process. The shadowy forms of silhouettes lead the reader from page to page until a momentary bright light is cast upon a particular turn of the story in the colorplate appearing at the opening and closing of each tale. In essence, I allow the reader to peer through the chinks in the wall of mystery which surrounds the fairy tale world. But I strive to leave that mytery intact.”

This first hardcover edition has been superseded by a softcover edition whose stories and silhouette illustrations are identical. The six colorplates from oil vignettes have been eliminated from the second edition in order to make it more affordable. However, a set of 6 lithographs from these paintings may still be purchased from Three Arts Press for $10.00.
